THE EXPERIENCE
If you’ve ever wanted to run, fire, or operate a historic locomotive, this is your moment.
In 2026, we’re offering five exclusive dates to climb into the cab and take control — highlighted by a return years in the making: Nickel Plate Road No. 765 at Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad.
Step into the cab as engineer, fireman, or both, aboard vintage steam and diesel locomotives. You won’t just be along for the ride. You’ll become part of the crew, taking part in a hands-on operating experience that puts you in direct control of the machine.
IN OHIO
At Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad on June 8th, you’ll take the throttle of Nickel Plate Road No. 765 through wooded curves and rolling scenery in the heart of a national park — a rare and celebratory return to one of our favorite venues.
Each session is approximately 30 minutes and operates at speeds up to 15 MPH. Guests should plan to spend at least one hour on site, including time on board observing and preparing for their experience.
IN INDIANA
On the Indiana Northeastern Railroad on May 17th, July 26th, August 23rd, or October 4th, you’ll operate over active freight trackage that showcases the feel of a working railroad, ideal for both steam and diesel sessions behind Nickel Plate Road No. 358 and No. 765.
This rare opportunity places you at the heart of the action — whether you’re managing the fire, reading the engine, or feeling the locomotive respond beneath your hand on the throttle.
Each session on the Indiana Northeastern is approximately 45 minutes in duration and operates at speeds up to 10 MPH.
And in the cab of No. 358, the experience shifts from the firebox to first-generation diesel. A vintage EMD-built locomotive will respond instantly to your command, delivering smooth, deliberate power as the prime mover comes to life beneath you. It’s railroading in its purest form: mechanical, precise, and deeply satisfying.
Throttle Time is the perfect gift for the lifelong railroad fan or the locomotive lover in your family. Experiences are offered separately for engineer and fireman positions.
All boarding and parking information is provided above and on your ticket purchase.
Family members interested in participating at the same time can purchase Fireman and Engineer time slots together.
THE FINE PRINT
All guest engineers must be 18 years of age or older, have a valid driver’s license, and all guest firemen must be 16 years of age or older, and all participants be in good health, have good mobility, and be able to climb ladders/stairs.
No guests or personal electronic devices are permitted in the cab of either locomotive, but we’ll be glad to get a picture for you.
Any family or friends in attendance will be welcome to view from the ground or trackside as you participate.
